About Sarah P. McLean
Hi, I'm Sarah McLean. I'm a writer with interests in mythology, religion, literature, and occultism. I spend much of my free time writing about these topics on Quora.com, and managing online spaces dedicated to these topics. I recently graduated from Connecticut College with a BA in English Literature, with a concentration in Creative Writing and a minor in Classics.
I became obsessed with mythology as a small child, beginning with children's bibles in the back of my closet and the D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. In recent years I've started to have a much more complex and nuanced understanding of mythology, because I've been familiarizing myself with the source material, and with the religious and cultural context around the myths.
I'm also interested in occultism, because if there's any way to do real magic in this world, I'm going to learn it! I remember pouring through Wizardology, hoping for some secret to real magic, and now I look back at it and recognize the real stuff alongside the fantasy. Since then, I've touched on almost every field of Western esotericism -- ceremonial magic, Hermeticism, British and American folk magic, the more modern philosophy of chaos magic, etc. Whether you believe in magic or not, magic and esotericism are fascinating from an intellectual standpoint, because they are near-universal features of human cultures, just like myth and folklore.

I also write fantasy novels, and my current project is called Shadowbook. I've been working on it for the last ten years, beginning when I was twelve, and I am now rewriting it for the second time to bring it up to scratch. I didn't set out to write a Cinderella story, but Shadowbook eventually evolved into a gothic take on Cinderella, inspired by the Jungian Shadow Complex. Once I finish telling this story, I have many more projects in the works!
